Geevor as a Heritage
Centre
 |
Cornwall
County Council acquired the present Geevor Tin Mine site,
buildings and content over a course of five years from 1992
to 1997. Further acquisitions of plant and equipment were
made with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial
Fund. By Spring 1993, the site was opened to the public
as a museum and was first run by Cornwall County Council
and subsequently by the Trevithick Trust. In October 2001,
Pendeen Community Heritage (PCH), a registered charity,
was awarded a contract for the management of Geevor. In
July 2003 the initial three |
year
contract was extended to run until September 2014. The three
aims of the present management are:-
The
conservation of Geevor’s heritage.
The
use of the site for all forms of education.
The
creation of sustainable employment.
Geevor Tin Mine is not
only the largest preserved tin mining site in Europe, but is also
one of the largest protected industrial heritage sites in the UK.
It is of international significance due to the key role it played
in the development of the tin mining industry and, in particular,
undersea mining.
