About Pendeen Comunity
Heritage
 |
Geevor
and the community of Pendeen have very strong links. Most
people in Pendeen or St Just have family connections
with the mine. During the 1980s around 400 people were
employed on the site. In 1986 the mine closed because of
the collapse of world tin prices. Though it reopened in
1988 with hopes of a recovery in tin prices, the mine closed
again in 1990.

The
mine is central to the village and village history. Local people
feel strongly that the heritage of the site should be preserved
and explained for future generations. Cornish miners and Cornish
mining techniques have made a great contribution to mining world-wide.
The people of Pendeen take a justifiable pride in that heritage.
In April 2001 a group of local people started a charity, Pendeen
Community Heritage (PCH), following a public meeting to discuss
the future of the Heritage Centre on the site.
In October 2001 Cornwall County Council, which owns the Geevor
site, chose PCH to manage the Heritage Centre at Geevor Tin Mine.
As a charity Pendeen Community Heritage aims:
To
manage, preserve, protect and interpret the mining heritage
of Geevor Mine, and other mining sites in the Pendeen and St
Just area, for the benefit of the people of Pendeen and St Just
and the public at large.
To educate the public about the history of mining in Cornwall.
We also plan to advance education and training in skills relevant
to securing employment in industrial heritage preservation and
allied fields.
We wish to ensure that developments on the Geevor site take
full account of social welfare interest and are consistent with
the object of improving the quality of life for local inhabitants
of Pendeen and St Just.
As a charity, PCH is dependent on public support to help its
work at Geevor. If you support our objectives and would like
to join us, wish to assist us with a donation or are considering
sponsorship please visit
the donations page. We value your support.
