Plans for the
Future
Main
aims: -
Improve
our education & outreach programme.
Create
a local history centre.
Offer
more special events and interactive activities for our visitors.
Explain
the story of Geevor through improved interpretation in the
museum and surface buildings.
Improve
access to other buildings on site.
Make
improvements to the landscape of the site. |
 |
Offer
better access to Geevor's archive.
Open
a new underground attraction, with visitor access by lift to
20th century workings.
Create
a new museum.
Geevor is central to the bid to UNESCO for World
Heritage Site status for Cornish mining. We aim to create a National Museum
which will form a centrepiece for the World Heritage Site.
Education
Ensure
that the whole site is intellectually accessible and that there
are things of interest for various age groups to do.
Continue
to develop a programme of educational workshops supported by
outreach work and resource material directly linked to the National
Curriculum.
Create
special workshops/outreach/resources for specific projects that
schools are doing where possible.
Specialist interest groups
Provide
a special service for such groups, e.g. access to specialist
guides and perhaps areas of the site which are not open to the
general public; this would include access to the archive.
Develop
a programme of lectures and special events, linking with Levant
Engine and other mining heritage sites in the area.
Offer
activities to non-mining specialist groups who could be interested
in the site, e.g. for its flora and fauna, social history, walking,
geography, archaeology, etc.
Families
Continue
to improve the intellectual accessibility of the site for families.
Create
activities of special interest for children.
Continue
to create trails and have special events during school holidays.
Those interested in wildlife,
landscape, walking, cycling, environmental issues, etc.
Enhance
the site by means of maps of walking routes, information on
wildlife and environment, cycle racks, signage from footpath
to site.
Those interested in the "authentic
Cornish" experience
Host
special events in partnership with other organisations in the
area, e.g. local theatrical companies, dance, music, steam enthusiasts.
Local People
Continue
to support the oral history project, with increased access and
a programme of exhibitions.
Join
the Penwith ’Go Card’ scheme offering free access
to local museums and heritage sites in order to encourage even
more local visitors to enjoy Geevor.
Open
the Local History Centre where people can find out about the
local area and its history and see the artefacts and photographs
given to the project.
