Clothing

Protective clothing had a real impact on safety in the mine. 

The 1974 Health and Safety Act greatly improved and regulated the provision of safety equipment. Miners would have been provided with safety kit such as boots, helmets, gloves, arm bands, ear and eye protection. Before 1974 safety equipment was provided but supplies were limited. As it was hot underground, it was common to see miners wearing very little clothing, often working bare-chested. Old jeans were a favourite. Latterly, miners were provided with overalls or bib and braces (at a cost of 50p or 30p respectively to cover laundry costs).
