Services Undergroundorange discoloured pipes running verticle underground

It was important to have services underground to maintain safe working conditions.

The deeper the mine went the conditions became increasingly hot and wet. In Cornwall for every 100m the mine went deeper underground, the rock temperature increased by 1°C.  Ventilation was crucial to lower the temperature and pumps were needed to remove water from the mine.
