Wheal Mexico Project

We know that what our visitors like best is going underground – we want them to see more of it. At Geevor, we’ve got skilled miners and mining engineers. We want to open up more of Wheal Mexico, Geevor’s visitor mine. At the moment, we can only show people a small part of the mine – there are a lot more tunnels. We can do the work to create access into it. It will mean digging out the rock and slime that block access at the moment and hauling the waste to the surface. We will put in a drainage system so that visitors can walk through in comfort.

The tunnels we will be clearing run in a southeasterly direction and are in granite, where necessary, the roof will be timbered for support. We know that there are more shafts and an area of stoping – where tin was extracted - that will be revealed. The project will give us a longer and a better tour with more to see and less waiting in busy times.

Work has started on Rock Shaft Drive with the old timber supports being renewed and a section of spilings being replaced with timber coverings. When this work is complete and the necessary infrastructure in place the task of clearing the drive will begin.

WHEAL MEXICO APPEAL

We need your help

We hope to raise £20,000

We need to raise funds for the plant, equipment and staff time we need to complete the project. If you would like to help you can make a donation online here (Please add Wheal Mexico Appeal to the comments section on the form), or alternatively print off the form here and post to us - thank you.

All the money we raise for the Wheal Mexico Project will go into a restricted fund and will only be used for the project.

The steel spilings can be seen in the roof of the tunnel before work started.
The new covering in place below the spilings.
Just beyond Rock Shaft a new spreader can be seen in the foreground with old ones behind
Old timber from Rock Shaft Drive. The one of the left is an old covering board whilst the other two timbers are spreaders.

The spreaders are still in very good condition despite being a hundred years old at least.

'AJ' at the back of the drive below what remains of the old timber coverings. The blockage can be seen behind him.
